Hook - Gavotta
Final Performance
Hook - Gavotta is set for the ABRSM Grade 1 piano exam (2011-12)
James Hook (1746-1827) was composing at the same time as Beethoven - indeed they both died in the same year - but Hook lived in England where he worked principally as a organist.
Hook's pieces tend to be more 'early classical' in style than those of Beethoven and they remain a popular choice for beginning pianists.
An excellent performance of this Gavotta will reflect the dance character of the gavotte. The moderate pace will be maintained and there will be some neat slurring, with contrast in dynamics.
Although the performance markings in the ABRSM edition are editorial, students would be advised to follow them since they give musical interest to the performance.
